I guess it was because of scheduling issues.The workload for a single season was too much to handle and also Wit weren't getting enough money for producing aot. With over 300 anime titles under their name now, Production I.G is open to experiment with a wide array of genres from shounen to seinen to even shoujo. It is produced by the animation studio Production I.G.
